Meet Lai Ping, Her Spiritual Journey

More than three decades ago, I dreamed of a better life and immigrated to Toronto from rural China at the age of twenty-two. At that time, I did not speak English. While working in Chinatown, I enrolled in ESL classes to learn basic conversation. The road was far from easy, but it marked the beginning of a profound journey of growth.

In November 2008, a vivid dream stirred something deep within me and inspired a pilgrimage to India. I packed a backpack and traveled alone, without booking hotels or joining tour groups. For one hundred days, I moved through unfamiliar places, often in very simple and challenging conditions. That experience became both demanding and deeply rewarding.

Throughout the journey, I was moved by the generosity, kindness, and open-heartedness of the people I encountered. Their compassion, faith, and hospitality left a lasting impression and awakened a new level of self-reflection and inner transformation. I felt inspired to document my experience as an expression of gratitude—what later became a deeply personal narrative of my inward journey.

In 2009, as I began writing and self-publishing Travelling Inwards, I encountered countless obstacles. I had little experience with English writing, struggled with spelling and grammar, and often questioned whether I was capable of completing such a project. Many times, I considered giving up. Language barriers, financial pressure, and self-doubt made the path especially demanding.

Yet, I discovered that each time I dared to dream beyond my perceived limitations, life responded in unexpected ways. I committed myself to seeing my vision through, trusting that growth comes from perseverance and courage rather than perfection.

To support myself during this period, I made difficult choices and devoted nearly all my time to writing. For nine months, I lived simply, spending long days revising, editing, and rewriting—often seeking feedback and embracing critique as part of the learning process. Through discipline, resilience, and steady commitment, the manuscript gradually took form.

Within a year, Travelling Inwards was completed and self-published—a realization that exceeded anything I had imagined possible for myself. The process taught me to trust my inner calling, to believe in my capacity to learn, and to persist even when the outcome was uncertain.

Later, I was honored when Hay House Publishing agreed to represent Travelling Inwards internationally. This recognition was deeply meaningful, not only as an achievement, but as a reminder that dedication and authenticity can open doors we never expect.

I share my story not to highlight accomplishment, but to offer encouragement. If this journey plants even a small seed of possibility—inviting you to trust yourself, to persist through uncertainty, or to take one brave step toward your own vision—then it has served its purpose.

Growth begins when we dare to listen inwardly and move forward with sincerity.

My Soulful Aspirations

When I chose the path of spiritual seeking, I understood that the true journey begins within. I committed this lifetime to inner exploration—welcoming challenges, embracing growth, and learning through experience.

As I traveled inward, I began studying my inner capacities, my relationship with the unseen world, and my purpose here on Earth.

I chose to take risks, face fears, release comfort, and remain open to discovery. I learned that this attitude would not diminish me—it would strengthen my resilience and expand my understanding. I longed for a life that was unpredictable, meaningful, and shaped by heartfelt, lived experiences rather than routine.

Along the way, I discovered the essential practice of self-love. Through learning to care for myself with honesty and compassion, my horizons expanded. I became more open to self-expression, growth, and the unfolding of new possibilities.

After seventeen years on this truth-seeking journey—through moments of insight, challenge, and self-realization—I chose courage. I chose to respond to what felt like an inner calling. I chose to use my experiences, lessons, and hardships to transform pain into purpose and to offer my energy in service to others.

I believe that together we can contribute to a shift in collective awareness—one rooted in self-reflection, expanded perspective, inner prosperity, and a deeper relationship with love and consciousness. Change begins within the individual and naturally extends outward.

I believe we are here to illuminate one another’s paths back to wholeness—through remembering our authentic nature, honoring natural wisdom, and nourishing the soul.

I also believe that you are your own greatest guide. Within you lives the caregiver, teacher, healer, and source of wisdom you may be seeking. My role is not to lead, but to remind—to reflect the strength and potential that already exists within you.

Our shared intention is to support those who seek a fuller, more meaningful life and to help lay a foundation of awareness and care for future generations.

I am deeply grateful for the friends and collaborators who walk alongside me—those who recognize this work as service and offer their time, creativity, and heart to support it. Their presence is a reminder that no journey is ever truly walked alone.

Book

In 2008, life surprised me. I was guided to India and blessed with an incredible adventure of self-discovery. Returning to Toronto, I realized with unwavering certainty that the generosity, compassion, and unconditional love of the Indian people were worthy of sharing with the world. This made me realize that a caring heart and love energy can heal us mentally, physically, and spiritually.

Travelling Inwards book review from a reader: “Lai Ping, As a would-be writer, I often wish I could say things as beautifully, and so I'm thankful that I have the opportunity to read things which leave me awed. Those people whom you touched in passing will remember you forever as well. For them, you were like a breath of fresh air.

Having read Travelling Inwards, I sense that you have spent long time writing. You have an admirable mind. With the combination of intelligence and compassion for others, you are set to be noticed by the world.

As I had mentioned to you personally, you are a pearl who was dropped among pebbles, and – not to offend the others in your book – having been tossed and turned over and over, you didn't lose your shine, but instead you had came out even more luminous.

So bravo, Lai Ping; the world is opening up; we have to see other parts of it, and not only in limited, one-sided ways. I know so much more about India now. It was as if I was there with you. I was there the whole one hundred days.

I would like to see more of China as well. Surely a lot of people would like to be enlightened about life in that great country.

I have read some of Pearl Buck’s stories, stories which have left a warm feeling in my heart for her characters. You have the writing skill. You can project unselfish love for others. China has changed. The characters have changed. They are waiting for you to introduce them to us. You have a gold mine to explore.

I have recognized a talent in your writing and am still awed by some of the things you had come up with in your book. You have the ability to produce excellent stuff with your pen. I'm looking forward to see it more.” John Maar
